SHOPPING IN THE GAMBIA

As you would expect from an African country, there are some bargains to be had. Good buys can include wood carvings and metalwork , batiks, sand paintings, leather goods and colourful shirts, trousers, dresses and wraps.

However, they are only good buys if you are prepared to barter. The tip here is to offer a third of the vendors First Price as a starting point and do not exceed what you think the item(s) is worth!

It can be easier to get a bargain at certain times of the day e.g. if you are the vendors first customer. It can also be easier to get bargains at certain times of the year, e.g. during the quieter off-peak season or even in the run-up to religious festivals (such as Ramadan October 2007) when vendors want your money to help them pay for their families celebrations.

You can find craft markets in the Kololi (Senegambia), Kotu, Fajara, Bakau and Cape Point areas, and some hotels have their own shop or visiting artists and retailers.

Albert Market (in Banjul) as well as Serrekunda and Brikama markets offer a greater (and sometimes cheaper) choice, and are an ideal opportunity to get a flavour for the real Gambia.

Finally, for those smokers amongst you, a carton of 200 cigarettes currently costs approximately 250 dalasi - a lot cheaper than Duty Free we think you'll agree! However, check your duty free allowance before filling up your suitcases (for both your inbound and outward bound journeys).
