MALANG JAMMEH BIRDWATCHING IN

THE GAMBIA

Hi there! My name is Malang Jammeh, well known as "Max" and I am an official Tourist Guide registered with The Gambia Tourism Authority based in the Official Tourist Guide office in front of The Senegambia Beach Hotel.

I became interested in the birdlife of The Gambia in 1999, when requests for birdwatching trips became more popular at the Tourist Guide Office. I subsequently joined the Resident Ornothologists Team at Senegambia Beach Hotel (under Mr Mass Cham who trained me up) for over two years, before rejoining the official Tourist Guides as their only birding guide.

I have a vast knowledge of the various bird habitats in my country, The Gambia, and I am able to identify most birds just by their birdsong although I do carry a copy of THE Birdwatching bible "A Field Guide to Birds of The Gambia and Senegal" written by Clive Barlow and Tim Watcher and illustrated by Tony Disley (Pica Press 1999) for customers use. As I have access to my own (registered, licensed and insured) vehicle I can offer a variety of tailor-made birding excursions to suit everyone's individual needs.

Half Day Trips include: -

Bund Road in Banjul at low tide in order to watch the various wading birds including the Pink Back Pelican, Longtail, White Breasted Cormorant, African Darther, Yellowbill Stoke, Oystercatcher, Pied Avocet, Rudy Toneston, Wimbrels, bartails, Black Tail Godwith, Flamingoes etc.

Bijilo Forest Park for the Oriel Warbler, Ahanta Fracolin, Little Bee Eaters, Snowy Crow, Robin Chat etc.

Fajara Golf Course and Kotu Bridge and cycle track area.

Day trips include: -

Abuko Nature Reserve (the oldest reserve in the country with over 100 species of bird including the Western Bluebill, Grey Headed Bristlebill, the Violet and Green Turaco, Kaalass and Diedrick Cookoo, Yellowbill etc.), Brufut Woods, Tanji Bird Reserve, Marakisa River Camp, Pirang Shrimp Farms and Faraba Banta Bush Track (in search of the Beatalur Eagle, Orampo Sparrow Hawk, Brown Snake Eagle, Brown Woodpecker etc.).

Further afield: -

I also offer trips to Seleti Waterhole in Southern Senegal, Tendaba Camp, Kiang West National Park and many more requiring overnight stays.

My Georgetown Trip is a minimum 3 night excursion, and incorporates a River Trip to Baboon Island (complete with Hippo Sightings, River Birds and Rice Fields) as well as a chance to visit the old underground slave house, the slave market and a trip to the Stone Circles across the river at Wassau. We then continue to Bansang Gravels (where the famous Red Throated Bee Eaters breed and where most evenings the Cenimon Breasted Bunting appears to drink). This trip can be extended to incorporate a trip up to Basse for sightings of the Crocodile Bird (i.e. the Egyptian Plover), the Carmine Bee Eater and the Lapet Face Vulture. On our return we can also pass through the Kaur Wetlands in search of the White Wing Black Tern etc. and, it goes without saying that on any of my excursions we can stop whenever you wish, or if we spot any other birds of interest to you!!!!
