- The currency of The Gambia is the Dalasi
(GMD). The lagest currency note being 100D, followed by; 50D, 25D, 10D
and lastly 5D.
- There are no restrictions on currency imports,
although you will almost always get a better rate of exchange if you
change your sterling, euros or dollars once you get to The Gambia.
- You can change your money or travellers
cheques at banks (remember to take your passport or other form of i.d.),
bureaux de change and hotels.
- Bank opening hours vary, but the Banks
open Monday - Thursday 8.00 a.m. 4.00 p.m. Fridays 8.00am - 1.30
p.m. and 2.30 p.m. - 4.00 pm, on Saturdays 09.00 to 1.30pm. All of the

- For Banks to operate in The Gambia they must deposit 150,000,000 Dalasi
with the Central Bank of The Ganbia which is similar to The Bank of
England policies.
- Credit cards are becoming more widely accepted in hotels, shops and
restaurants but most will levy a surcharge.
- You can also use your credit cards ( Visa only ) to withdraw cash
(maximum of GMD 2,000 per transaction) at the vast majority of the banks
listed above using ATM's located along Kairaba Avenue (also known for
being the site of the first set of traffic lights in The Gambia. However,
you should not rely on them entirely for your spending money as they
are prone to running out of money or temporarily shutting down due to
power cuts.
