2006 Catch Information

Welcome to our Gambian angling report for last year - 2006. This report shows what was caught by Hooked On Gambia anglers throughout the year. Enjoy!

Apologies to all of our regular readers for the delayed updates, due not least to problems with our land line and dial up connection facilities from September through to December '06 and then our (t)rusty old computer 'blowing up' in early December '06 - ah the joys of living in Africa!

Anyway, without further ado, here are the results of our anglers efforts for October to December 2006. And, we further apologise for any omissions in names, countries of origin, fish details etc. as our memories aren't what they used to be!

30/12/06 Alex & David Richards - Wales After a day of respite, this father & son combo were back for more, although whether it was as a result of such a busy couple of weeks, or that they simply had a lousy day's fishing, we forgot to record where we sent them and what they did or didn't land - OOOPS! First new year's resolution for 2007, remember to write EVERYTHING down in the little black book Fiona!
29/12/06 John Luddington - Wales & Mr Brian Grunnill - England John, with the patience of a saint, paired up with Mr Brian even on this, his last day fishing with us in 2006! This time on board Lady Rita with Sanna they headed out to do battle with the inshore reefs and came back with plenty of Butterfish up to 5kg's and a 7kg Cassava.
29/12/06 Keefer Pitfield & Max Bachman - Canada A huge Hooked On Gambia welcome to our very first Canadian anglers who have come out here to show us how to fly fish properly ( hee, hee!) So, paired up with Dembo on board Lady Fiona, so that they had room to cast their flies, we sent them up the creek to the flatter waters, where, finally giving up on the flies, they landed 2 Snapper on the bottom.
28/12/06 John Luddington - Wales & Mr Brian Grunnill - England Meanwhile, on board Lady Fiona with Dembo, John & Brian appeared to have spent their day Butterfish bashing, but did manage to land a new species that Dembo reckons was similar to an Angel fish but yellowy-orange in colour - Any suggestions?????
28/12/06 Alex & David Richards - Wales It's a bit like 'DejaVue' - only this time we sent both boats to the Reef given that Barra continues to under-deliver. Once again teamed up with Sanna (and in an endeavour to win the  wager with John & Brian) the Swansea boys certainly had more species - 1 Cassava, Frogfish, Wrasse and Doctor Fish.
27/12/06 John Luddington - Wales & Mr Brian Grunnill - England Oh yes - he's back (having turned up unannounced at our house on the 23rd) and John has kindly agreed to share a boat with him so that he can get out fishing this week, and we wish he hadn't as instead of 1 disappointed angler, we had two! Nada on board Lady Fiona with Dembo!
27/12/06 Alex & David Richards - Wales A very warm Hooked On Gambia welcome to our first Swansea Anglers courtesy of Roger's Tackle in Swansea Marina, although it turns out that we already knew them being that the Swansea fishing fraternity is pretty tight - even now.

So here goes, day 1, and over at Barra on board Lady Rita with Sanna, they landed a 5kg Thick Lipped Grouper and a Banded Eel.

26/12/06 John & Cath Luddington - Wales John & Cath however, weren't quite as lucky, not only did they manage to eat all their food without the monkeys they only managed to land Frogfish. It just goes to show doesn't it?
26/12/06 Phil & Sally Bashford - England What better way to relax after the excesses of Christmas Day (not least due to the Hooked On Gambia BBQ special at MacDomoro's bar) than a spot of bird watching, creek fishing and lunch at Lamin Lodge, which was only slightly marred when a monkey stole one of their sandwiches! This lovely couple also caught a Grouper, 2 Snapper and lost a Barracuda to boot.
24/12/06 John & Cath Luddington - Wales A Xmas Eve half day in the creek proved to be little more than a sightseeing trip, but at least it's given John some ideas for his 'proper' fishing scheduled to begin on Boxing Day!
20/12/06 Maurice Deighton - Isle of Arran & John Henning - England Hoping that a new fishing partner may prove to be the turning point this holiday, coupled with lighter winds, the pair headed out to the inshore reefs where they landed a 6kg Barracuda (lost another), a Snapper, 3 BIG Frogfish, a small Grouper and 2 sea snakes (Banded Eels), so whilst not brilliant, it was definitely an improvement!
19/12/06 John & Sarah Malone With strong winds (again) restricting fishing to the creeks, we were relieved when these new customers managed to whittle out a couple of Snapper on the 'bends'.
17/12/06 Maurice Deighton - Isle Of Arran & Steve Symes - England  This time combining fishing Barra with Creek fishing, the guys found 2 Doctor Fish, an Angel Fish and another bucket full of 'Bait' Fish.
15/12/06 Maurice Deighton - Isle Of Arran & Steve Symes - England  A very warm Hooked On Gambia welcome back to Maurice who paired up with our latest in a long line of new anglers to fish Barra. Unfortunately, Barra continues to disappoint and all the guys had to show for their efforts were a couple of butterfish, a Sompat and lots of small 'Bait' Fish.
14/12/06 Ian Shevill - England I know that we said that we wouldn't tell Mum where we were, but being that she doesn't check this site we should be on pretty safe ground (hee, hee)! Following on from his success on the 11th, and wanting more, we decided to take 'pops' trolling for a couple of hours. Restricted to the creeks, as dad's prone to seasickness, we discovered 2 Senegalese pirogues netting illegally inside the creek where a fellow angler had landed 20 Barracuda the day before!!!! Needless to say as we approached, they disappeared PDQ but not before we took a few piccies - just in case the fisheries department ever decide to take our complaints seriously and would like the evidence! So, with all chance of catching a 'cuda dashed, we ended up fishing the small hole opposite the bridge itself and proceeded to catch all sorts of bait fish to keep Dad amused, until the inevitable phone call from Mum came asking where we were!
13/12/06 Hooked On Gambia Bob, desperate for a day's fishing, teamed up with Dembo and Sanna for a day in the creek. Unhampered by the rain, thunder and lightning (????What, at this time of the year????) the guys still landed 5 Snapper to 3kg, and lost another 5, on the peanut wrecks.
11/12/06 Althea & Ian Shevill - England - otherwise known as Fi's mum & dad!! Ian's first holiday to The Gambia and first time fishing since he was a 'small lad', and in spite of the really blustery conditions (even making fishing the wrecks in the creek system impossible), Fi & Dembo managed to find them some fish - 5 Sompat, a Captain Fish and 4 Frogfish, interspersed with a leisurely lunch at Lamin Lodge and some bird watching for Althea. Dad Dec 06.jpg (168855 bytes)

Ian 'Pops' Shevill with his 1st ever Sompat

07/12/06 Scott Turner & Jane Leeks - England OK, so once again nothing big, but these guys went all out on species - a 2kg Barracuda (caught in the creek again) and then after losing a big Stingray after a 30 minute fight on the reef, they landed Wrasse, Frogfish, Trigger Fish, Catfish, Butterfish, several small Stingray and Sompats. Scott Turner and Jane Leeks 2kg barracuda.jpg (1123388 bytes)

Scott & Jane with their 'Cuda

06/12/06 Neil & Hazel Vine - England With all sea fishing cancelled due to strong winds, these new Hooked On Gambia customers ended up with a day's creek fishing where nevertheless they landed a 4 kg Barracuda, a small Stingray and lots of Frogfish and Butterfish.
05/12/06 Bob & Sue Hyslop - Isle Of Wight & Mike Opreshko - England What's that saying - another day, another dollar, and lots of small fish???? A Stingray, Thick lipped Grouper, Wrasse, Angel Fish and 3 Butterfish, but where are all the big fish?
01/12/06 Jack Beagan & Sandy Marshall - Scotland & Dave Tarpey - England One last day for the guys, and back on the reefs they struggled to get some Catfish, a Wrasse, and a couple of butterfish. It's just a shame that Sandy missed out on Jack's excellent fishing at the start of their hols. We really enjoyed your company guys, and we'd love to see you out here again sometime.

29/11/06 David Wickett & Danny Sterland - England More new customers (and sick ones to boot), but before succumbing to their sickness, the guys landed 3 Butterfish, a Stingray and a Sompat on the reefs.
28/11/06 Peter Robson - England And again, Barra disappointed. Only a Frogfish and a Sompat to show for the day's efforts..... what's going on? Anyway, we all agreed that this wasn't to be Pete's BIG fish holiday and decided to call it a day for this year. Fingers crossed for next!!!
27/11/06 Jack Beagan & Sandy Marshall - Scotland Back from the dead, and back on board, Sandy and Jack headed over to Barra where they didn't have a sausage - what were we saying about yesterday???? the guys even lost a Barracuda in the creek - arghhhhhhhhh!
26/11/06 John Allen - The Gambia & his 3 friends from various international origins... Its lovely to help out our good friends in The Gambia, so when John & Pam phoned us, we agreed to putting 4 of them onboard for a day's fishing. Unfortunately, the fish at Barra weren't as accommodating and the catch results weren't even worth recording - possibly our most disappointing day to date!
25/11/06 Jack Beagan & Sandy Marshall - Scotland Finally, having got Sandy out of his sick bed,  Jack wanted to take him out to show him how good the reef fishing was. Unfortunately, Sandy became very ill on board, which resulted in us breaking the Operation Clean The Nation curfew in order to collect him from the boat at Denton and get him back to his hotel. Fortunately, with Sandy being a nurse, we knew that he was in good hands!
24/11/06 Jack Beagan - Scotland & Dave Tarpey - England With his fishing partner Sandy still ill, Jack paired up with Dave for the day and headed out onboard Lady Rita with Dembo to the inshore reefs again. This time, the guys had 5 Cassava to 10kg, a Black Grouper with an orange mouth (this isn't the latin scientific name we hasten to add!), Doctor Fish, Wrasse, 2 small Choff (another member of the Grouper family), Trigger Fish, and Angel Fish - not a bad day, we're sure that you'll agree!
23/11/06 Peter & Pauline Robson - England So Peter's back for more, and this time he's brought along his very own pheromone supply in the form of his lovely wife Pauline for a spot of creek fishing and Lamin Lodge. And, whadya know, it worked. Pete lost three ripping runs before landing his biggest Angel Fish ever (3kg), a Captain Fish, a Stingray, a big Sompat and some Frogfish, and they also managed to squeeze in some monkey watching (well monkey's drinking from fanta bottles) at Lamin.
22/11/06 Jack Beagan - Scotland A very warm welcome to new Hooked On Gambia anglers - its just unfortunate that Sandy Marshall was too ill to even make their first day fishing! Ah, well Jack more  than made up for it.... Paired up with Dembo on board Lady Rita on the reef, Jack managed to land 3 Cassava to 7kg and a thick lipped Grouper. Jack reckons that he lost 2 very BIG Cassava (might have been Snapper?) when his line snapped on the reef. Anway, well done - not a bad start to the fishing holiday! jack beagan dec061.JPG (90020 bytes)

Jack Beagan with one of his Cassava

21/11/06 Nicky, Peter & Callin Pancaro - England A big Hooked On Gambia welcome to this lovely new family of anglers who, in spite of seasickness, managed to rack up 4 Butterfish, a Catfish, a Frogfish, a Cassava followed by a circa 30kg Stingray and then by a Barracuda trolling on their way back in! We were delighted to more than make up for the disappointing holiday that you were having in the Palm Grove - and glad that you now want to come back to The Gambia on holiday again!
20/11/06 Peter Robson - England OK, so today was a complete waste of time on the reef, and no amount of Spam and Tomato Ketchup sandwiches were going to get the fish to feed Peter, were they?? Anyway, final scores on the doors - a Wrasse and small bait fish only, SORRY!
17/11/06 David & Jason Ross - England OK - so for these anglers it really didn't matter what the wind was doing, as Dad was always going to be seasick in spite of the tablets on board! So, heh, we sent them up the creek and a stop over at Lamin Lodge! And - RESULT - the guys had 5 Snapper, a Talappis, a 3kg Captain Fish, a Butterfish, a Sompat and the smallest Shiny Nose that Dembo's ever seen - it could only have been 5mm long courtesy of Dad! But, heh, Dad wasn't sick, and today they apparently had 3,000 laughs!!!! Thank you guys for being such great company - we look forward to seeing you out here again, only next time we'll just book you in for Creek Fishing!!!
16/11/06 Peter Robson & Jonathan Davies - England Paired up together, the duo were due to fish the reefs, however the wind was determined to ruin the day, and the anglers only managed to whittle out 1 Snapper and a Talappia in the creeks - arghhhh, sorry Jonathan!
15/11/06 Jonathan Davies - England Another warm welcome to Jonathan, another new Gambian angler! Unfortunately, the wind was against us in the morning, so having started out in the creek system, Dembo finally managed to get out to Barra, where the day's disappointing tally  finished with a Sompat of approx. 1 kg, a small Jack Trevalle, a Jotta and 6 tiny Shiny Nose!
14/11/06 Peter & Pauline Robson - England Thankfully, Pete was feeling a bit better today, so paired up with Pauline, his long suffering wife of many years, the happy couple headed up the creek for a day's R&R. And, yup, you guessed it Pauline had the most luck. Nevertheless, Peter  managed to notch up a couple of small Captain Fish, a Snapper and a Stingray.
11/11/06 Hooked On Gambia Well, we'd already bought the bait, and Dembo had already brought Lady Rita in off her mooring and got her ready, so when we showed up at Cape Point Hotel and found out that Peter Robson was sick, we just carried on down to Denton Bridge and went out fishing ourselves. And, because the Boss Lady decided to come out too, we headed up the creek system (her favourite relaxing spot) and, as usual, she found the fish! a Cassava of 5.5kg, 4 Red Snapper to around 3kg - but we/she lost a further 8! - a strangled Catfish and 1Jotta - Thank you Fi - that's the last time we're bringing you along!!!!!
10/11/06 David & Jason Ross - England Father and son back for more - and this time we were prepared. Sea Sickness tablets by the packet-full! So, paired up with Dembo again, the pair headed out to Barra where son lost a big run and Dad was sick again! So, back in the creek system (again) the pair lost approx. 7 snapper in the wrecks, managed to land 4 reasonable sized Snapper to around 3kg and apparently had another thousand laughs!!!!!
09/11/06 John & Sandra McHale - England More new customers who we paired up with Alhadgie on board Octopussy (at the last minute as our second skipper let us down) and who made it as far as the second inshore reef after Denton Bridge before Sandra succumbed to sea sickness and they asked to be dropped back on to the beach in front of their hotel. Sandra had said that she was prone but, as it was the last day of their holiday, she was happy to indulge her husband by joining him on board for the day. Can we just say John, we think you're an absolute angel for getting off with Sandra - most anglers, including Bob, would have gone back out fishing again for the day!!!!!
09/11/06 Peter Robson & Tony Webb - England Well, what can we say, it's an absolute delight to welcome Peter and his wife Pauline back to The Gambia (especially seeing as though they are celebrating their silver wedding anniversary out here this holiday) - and yes, Pete is a man after Bob's heart - he leaves Pauline in the hotel whilst he goes fishing with a new Hooked On Gambia angler Tony!

Anyway, paired up with Dembo on board Lady Rita they headed out to see where they only managed to whittle out a few Doctor Fish, Trigger Fish and Angel Fish etc. Not the most auspicious of starts to the holiday Pete!

08/11/06 Karl Tahir & Paul Carroll - England & Ireland respectively On board Lady Rita with Dembo, these new to us anglers also went to fish the inshore reefs, where they landed a Cassava to approx. 8kg, a small Barracuda of circa 4kg, as well as Trigger Fish, Angel Fish, Doctor Fish, Pompano, Wrasse and a host of other smaller reef fish.
07/11/06 Jason & David Ross - England A very warm welcome to these new Hooked On Gambia father and son anglers. And on this, their first day, they headed out to the inshore reefs with Dembo on board Lady Rita where dad was sick, but nevertheless they still managed to land a couple of Eels, Frogfish, 3 Catfish, a Wrasse and apparently a thousand laughs!
02/11/06 John Wolstencroft - England A day's reef fishing on board Lady Rita with Dembo was the order of the day for this new Hooked On Gambia angler. John landed 2 small Barracuda, a couple of Snapper (although they lost a third) and a 'no name fish' which was later identified as a Chocha (member of the Grouper Family).

    October 2006

Only managing to squeeze a few trips in between thunder storms, the much anticipated annual refurbishment of Lady Rita, and the start of the new season. Which, we hasten to add, started sooner than anticipated and caught us unawares, so BIG apologies to Richard and Val who had their second fishing day postponed whilst we were waiting for the gel coat and paint to dry!!

29/10/06 Richard & Val Benson - England OK - so Lady Rita was still not finished - not least due to the two nights rain that we'd had, but at least the paint and gel coat was dry (just!) and we'd got her back in the water. So, Richard and Val headed to sea and managed to land 9 Cassava to approx. 7.5kg and 3 Ladyfish to 7kg. A result - well worth waiting for we think you'll agree!
20/10/06 Richard & Val Benson - England A very warm and somewhat humid welcome to our first anglers for the new season! And, as Lady Rita was still undergoing her re-fit, Richard and Val spent the day in the creek system with Dembo on board Lady Fiona. And, not a bad start to the season - 6 small Snapper (c. 2kg), a couple of Grouper, 3 Frogfish, a Choff, a Banded Eel, Catfish and lost one Butterfish.
03/10/06 Hooked On Gambia OK, so we were pushing our luck with the tides, but we still managed to find a small 2kg Snapper on the wrecks.
02/10/06 Hooked On Gambia Another creek day (well, why go to sea when the fish are on your doorstep?) and another 3 Ladyfish to 10kg and a 2kg Red Snapper.
01/10/06 Hooked On Gambia A true off peak Hooked On Gambia fishing day in the creeks, where Bob and Dembo managed to land 3 Ladyfish to 10kg, 4 Snapper to 2kg and a Talappia - all on bonga and shrimp cocktails.

    September 2006

After a very wet and stormy August, we are just keeping our fingers crossed for September as Nick Calvert (our very own wind God) has telephoned to say that he's flying back out to try fishing in The Gambia during the Green Season. Well, we're always banging on about how good the fishing is out in The Gambia during the rains, so Nick's decided to come and see for himself. Here's hoping...... as the weather forecast isn't looking very good!!!!

17/09/06 Hooked On Gambia After a few days recuperating from our colds - kindly brought on by Nick's last few 'wet' days - Bob and Hassan headed out to Barra to see if there were any fish remaining after several days of very heavy rain. And, whilst they caught nothing BIG, they still landed several Cassava to around 5kg, jotta, Catfish and more Sompat.
11/09/06 Nick Calvert - England Unfortunately, Nick's last full day in the country saw us taking a detour between his hotel and Denton Bridge, via our house, in order to sit out a full blown storm. After 2 hours drinking a flask of coffee by candle light at home, we continued on to the Bridge. Although the storm had passed, the skies were still full of rain and whilst trying to catch live bait under the Bridge itself, the decision was made to remain in the creeks again. Dressed in full wet weather gear, Nick, Bob and Hassan were determined to make the most of it, and went on to catch lots of Jottas and a very small Cassava right in front of Fi who was left getting soaked on 'dry land' at Denton Bridge just in case they changed their minds and wanted to come in early!
10/09/06 Nick Calvert - England Back on board Lady Rita, this time with Hassan (another of our standby skippers) Nick and Bob headed into the creeks. Although this time the Captain Fish weren't around and the day's catch included plenty of Jotta's, small Cassava, Catfish, Frogfish and a snake (Banded Eel).
09/09/06 Nick Calvert - England Undeterred, we took Nick for another day's beach fishing, but this time to our favourite Gunjur spot where we battled with very big spring tides, and tree and flip flop fish!!! Nevertheless, Nick managed to whittle out 4 big butterfish and, yup you guessed it, another Sompat.
08/09/06 Nick Calvert - England A day away from the boat (read a day off) saw Nick and Bob fishing Radio Syd towards Banjul which disappointingly only produced one small Sompat.
07/09/06 Nick Calvert - England A slightly brighter start to the day, so Nick and Michael headed back out to Barra on board Lady Rita where they landed a Cassava around 5kg and a small Ladyfish. Returning via the creek system saw them landing 5 Captain Fish to 6kg , a small Stingray and about 40 Jottas!
06/09/06 Nick Calvert - England One look at the sky suggested that the weather was finally about to break again and Nick was therefore content to try the creek system onboard Lady Rita with Michael again. And it seems that this decision was the right one, as Nick landed a 22kg Stingray, 2 small Captain Fish, Sompat and other smaller fish as well as losing a decent captain fish as it snagged itself around the prop.
05/09/06 Nick Calvert - England As the tides were picking up quickly we sent Nick over to Cape Point with Michael (we'd also seen the weather forecast and felt that today may be Nick's last chance at fishing the inshore reefs). And, Nick's verdict on the day, having been spoilt on the previous 2 days, was "crap!"  Nevertheless, Nick still managed to add 2 Queenfish to his list of species (Bob's been trying to catch Queenfish since first coming to The Gambia 8 years ago!) as well as a decent sized Tuna!
04/09/06 Nick Calvert - England Back at Barra, Nick phoned within a couple of hours of leaving Denton Bridge to say that he'd finally had his BIG Captain Fish. Today's tally, 3 Captain Fish to 13kg, 3 Cassava to 5kg and he confessed to losing another big fish.
03/09/06 Nick Calvert - England On board Lady Rita with Michael, Nick headed out to Barra whilst Bob and Fi sat and waited at Denton Bridge nervously watching the skies. Although after just one hour, Michael phoned to say he had one very contented angler on board and Nick could be heard laughing above the sound of screaming reels. The final tally, 7 cassava to 6kg, 2 small'ish captain fish, a very good sized Jack and 4 or 5 Sompat to a massive 6kg. Not a bad start we think you'll agree!

    August 2006

As with July, August got off to a very thunderous start. The night of the 1st saw another very big storm with torrential rain which has finally found the weak points in the roof of our house and yup, you guessed, resulted in frantic moving of furniture and strategic placing of buckets around the house - AGAIN!!! The 2nd was spent mopping up and drying out the house whilst the 3rd was spent pumping out the boats at Denton Bridge. Our main priority is now getting the roof watertight for any future downpours and in the meantime, maintenance onboard Lady Rita progresses slowly. Any repainting has been put off in the hope of a dry forecast for 3 days and nights to give the paint time to dry properly although Bob's been using the time constructively stripping all the fishing reels and Fi has been checking out new and alternative accommodation for our Hooked On Gambia fishing safari customers along the Gambian coastline. Our planned return to Senegal for Blue Water fishing (scheduled for mid August) has had to be postponed whilst we wait for work to be carried out on the Toyota Landcruiser, BUT on a more positive note enquiries for the 2006-07 Gambia Fishing season are flooding in. We just hope that we can squeeze in all the maintenance and some more fishing time for ourselves before then! Watch this space.......

29/08/06 Hooked On Gambia Not deterred in our search for peace and quiet and some dry weather, we headed back down to Gunjur (this time on our own) where the off road conditions were even worse.... Nevertheless, we still managed to see a big Captain Fish (which Bob lost on an incoming wave), a 5kg Butterfish and Fi had a Sompat before being rained off once again. At least we had the foresight to put dry clothes in the car this time!!!
28/08/06 Hooked On Gambia We decided to try Atlantic beach, Banjul for a spot of beachcasting nearer to home as the sky was still looking very threatening even after the very heavy rain the day before. 1 butterfish and some serious hassle / bumstering within only 1 hour (not to mention the celebrations closing the roads as the President announced that he was running for President again) meant an early return to our local in Bakau.
27/08/06 Hooked On Gambia & Pisces Fishing Trips - The Gambia Coupled with our fellow fishy friends from Denton Bridge the Pisces Girls, we headed down to one of our favourite beach spots at Gunjur for a bit of 'girlie' beach casting tuition from Bob. Unfortunately by the time we got the girls up and out of bed and got to the beach, we had just a couple of hours before being, quite literally, blown off the beach. Nevertheless, Bob still managed to catch a 4kg Butterfish and a nice sized Jack (donated to the village kids in case we ever get stuck off road and need a few willing hands) before driving back in our underwear (whilst drying our clothes on the roof rack, wing mirrors etc. gambian style) to dry clothes and a nice hot toddy!
23/08/06 Condor Air crew - Germany On behalf of a Janneh Sportfishing company in The Gambia (you see some of us do work together) we hosted 4 of the German air crew including the pilot, co-pilot and navigator for a spot of creek fishing before sending them blue water fishing with our new Senegalese friends in Dakar.

The creek fishing day produced 7 Captain fish to 7kg as well as a Stingray and some butterfish. And, although they didn't have the same number of fish in Dakar, they certainly bagged a nice Sailfish to add to their African stop over tally. Well Done Guys!

21/08/06 Eileen & Iris (Clayton's auntie and friend) - England A non-fishing sightseeing creek trip for Clayton's auntie and her friend taking in Lamin Lodge complete with some birdwatching for a few hours. We've never seen such happy faces coming back with no fish before!!!!
18/08/06 Clayton Guest - Wales A very warm Hooked On Gambia welcome back to Clayton who, on board Lady Fi with Bob and Michael, headed off for a mix of fishing at Barra returning via the creeks. And although the guys lost 4 very good runs at Barra (2 probably from Cassava and 2 bitten off on 80lb line by some mean 'cuda on the bottom) they still managed to bag a very BIG Pompano, 6 very large Butterfish and some Choff in the creeks.

    July 2006

July has got off to a very 'stormy' start. The night of the 2nd saw a storm lasting approx. 3 hours but it was nowhere near as violent as that of the early hours of the 4th when our neighbour's house was struck by lightning during the night. We've finally found someone (Jurgen) who dislikes storms as much as Fi and the dog!!!! Fortunately, both storms were during the night and, if anything, appear to have triggered the fish into feeding. So, with clear(ish) skies, Monique and Jurgen kicked off this month's trips for us..... and here's keeping our fingers crossed for more of the same - fishing not storms you understand?!!!

24/07/06 Hooked On Gambia Again paired up with Michael (still no sign of Dembo!) Bob took Lady Rita over to Cape Point as the tides were picking up. And, at last, a purple day! A 5kg Cassava, 5 GIANT Butterfish, a big pompano, a 9-Bones, thick lipped Grouper, Choff, Angel Fish, lots of Jacks and even a small Tuna!!!
20/07/06 Hooked On Gambia Again on lady Rita, Bob and Michael headed over to Barra (as we're on neap tides) for a nosey.... 1 Cassava (approx. 4kg) some Jotta and a Catfish. Dembo's apparently gone walkabout, so if anyone's seen him perhaps you could e-mail us!!!!
11/07/06 Hooked On Gambia On board Lady Rita, Bob and Dembo (yes he's back) headed out to Barra to make the most of the last of the Barra tides. Unfortunately, even we, the Professionals occasionally get it wrong and in spite of catching some small Choff and a couple of Catfish, the Captain Fish were feeding over towards Cape point - arghhhh!!!
05/07/06 Monique & Jurgen De Regte - Holland On board Lady Rita with Michael and Bob, Monique and Jurgen fished over at Barra where they landed 12 Cassava to 6kg, 2 Stingray to 18kg, a thick lipped Grouper, a Snapper, a couple of Sunpats, Frogfish and a small Captain fish.

    June 2006

Well, for those of you who haven't visited our Contact Us page recently, we've just got back from our Northern Senegal holiday and therefore haven't got much to report on the Gambian fishing front this month. However, as we went fishing on our hols. (obviously) we can inform you that the Senegalese blue water season has just started - and what a start!!!!! Our very first day and 60-odd miles out, we caught lots of Bonito and Bob finally caught and released a 250kg+ Blue Marlin after a 3 hour fight - his first Marlin and his biggest fish yet!!! On our second trip out (it took Bob a week to recover from his first day) we saw tens of Sailfilsh right around the boat but failed to hook up, which was a bit frustrating, but an amazing sight nevertheless. We also spent a couple of days beach fishing and had lots of sea trout and sunpats but failed to hook up any Dorado which apparently could be caught from the beach. We were sooooo impressed with the companies that we fished with, that we are now in the process of putting together a combined Gambia and Senegal fishing safari to offer you, our friends, a similar experience which will be available 'reel' soon. To find out more check out our Blue Water Fishing In Senegal page or Contact Us

Back to basics upon our return, and although our main concern is getting Dembo fit again  (he is still 'off sick' with a bad back - has he caught it from Bob?), we couldn't just leave the boats idle, so we've hooked up with our stand by skippers and been out for a couple of days ourselves (well it's got to be done.....). And, in spite of the African Union summit in Banjul (25th June to 2nd July 2006) and our Operation Clean the Nation restrictions on Saturdays we have some Spanish anglers out here. Here's the results.....

29/06/06 Monique & Jurgen De Regte - Holland On board Lady Rita with Francois, the pair headed out to fish the inshore reefs where they landed a small Butterfish before the sea conditions forced them back in to the creeks. Here, they added 2 Ray's to their day's tally including an Eagle Ray of approx. 23kg which were both released.
24/06/06 Alan & Julio Escurado - Spain On board Lady Rita with Michael, the father and son combo headed out to the inshore reefs around Cape point and Fajara. Fortunately the pair managed to land a 9kg Captain Fish, a 9-Bones and a Cassava before Julio got ill and they motored round to Banjul. Here in calmer waters, they added a Stingray, a Butterfish, another Cassava and some Jotta to their days tally. Not a bad start we're sure that you'll agree.. Unfortunately, this turned out to be the duo's last day with us as they got 'bumstered' in to general sightseeing trips for the remainder of their weeks holiday.
18/06/06 Hooked On Gambia On board Lady Rita with Francois, we headed back out to Cape again. This time it was so quiet that we motored over to Barra for slack water where we had 2 Cassava to 6.5kg, a nice Grouper and 4 or 5 Catfish. Well, it was better than a poke in the eye with a blunt stick!!!!
18/06/06 Hooked On Gambia On board Lady Rita with Francois we headed out to Cape Point in search of the Captain Fish that were supposedly feeding there over the last few days.... We had 3 Butterfish and a small Captain Fish (we also lost a big run as the fish crossed one of our other lines and dropped the bait) and it was a pretty quiet day all round.

    May 2006

At last, the fishing started to pick up during the latter part of last month - and about time too!!! Nevertheless, the wind continues to blow, the sea (although slightly warmer) and air temperatures are also below average for this time of year. Just what is going on with this weather? Everyone is predicting early rains - perhaps by the end of this month ..... But, once they start, we know that the fishing usually improves and maybe the winter duvet can finally come off the bed!

21/05/06 Darren & Claire Arturi - England On board Lady Rita with Francois (Dembo's still out of action) our newest customers headed out to Barra where they lost one big run (possibly a big Stingray) and landed a 3kg Cassava before sea sickness got the better of Claire. Back in the creeks, Claire had a Snapper of 2kg (you see, the female angler again...) and although losing another 3 Snapper hits they bagged a Frogfish, 4 Catfish and a small Sunpat.
13/05/06 Hooked On Gambia Desperate news: Dembo has put his back out (a la Bob) and has already been out of action for 1 week!!! Bob and Fi were therefore cajoled into spending a day aboard a pirogue for a Lazy Day. Now, the official reason was a friend's birthday party, but nevertheless we snook some fishing gear and bait on board and were rewarded with a huge Butterfish and lots of admiring oohs and aahs from our fellow party goers! We've got to admit though, if you're not in to fishing, this really is a great day out ......

     April 2006

Well, what more can we say ..... after a very disappointing end to fishing in March (so you see Nick it isn't just you) we can only pray for better piscatorial pursuits in April when we've got a number of new customers. We've also got a number of bookings from female anglers and our experience shows that, invariably, it's the female angler that has the better catch . Read on and see.........

26/04/06 Steve & Bev Robinson-Grindey - England Last day for Steve and Bev and given the bruising suffered by Bev on the reef yesterday, they've opted for a 'quiet' day in the creeks. And, winding down after some pretty impressive catches, the pair managed 2 more Snapper (2kg), 3 Frogfish, 2 small Angel Fish and a small Choff. So, who caught the biggest / most fish???? You were an absolute delight to take fishing and, even though we know you've booked for next year already, we can't wait to see you both back here!
25/04/06 Peter Hallam - England On board Lady Fiona with Michael, Peter landed 3 Ladyfish to 3kg, a Catfish and a Snake in the creeks - so you see Nick he can catch fish, just not big ones every day!
25/04/06 Steve & Bev Robinson-Grindey - England Another 'rough' day back out on the reefs and Steve and Bev landed a Snapper (1.5kg), a Cassava (3.5kg) and a 4kg Butterfish and it's quite clear that Bev prefers Barra.
23/04/06 Peter Hallam - England Back for more ?angling action? but this time leaving Nick back in the UK, Pete's determined to prove that he CAN catch BIG fish and that IT IS just Nick! On board Lady Fiona with Michael, Peter set his stall out early on with 2 Cassava to 12.5kg (honest) and a big Sunpat of 3kg.
23/04/06 Steve & Bev Robinson-Grindey - England Day 5 (excuse us if we lose count here) and our intrepid duo headed back out to Barra for some more big fish action ....  and 'love is...' letting your husband catch a 6kg Ladyfish (ooohhh!!) before bagging yourself a 3.5kg Cassava. Steve & Bev came back through the creeks and managed to land a Snapper and a Choff to round the day off.
22/04/06 Hooked On Gambia Making the most of a free day (due to Chris' illness) and Bob and Dembo also headed out to Barra where they had 6 Cassava to 8kg (all on Yahboy livebait) and probably lost around another 6 as all the rods were going at once- or that's their excuse and they're sticking to it!
21/04/06 Steve & Bev Robinson-Grindey - England Day 4 and Steve and Bev headed out to Barra, where Bev had a very nice 12kg Cassava and a 4.5kg Ladyfish and who was it who caught the 5kg Grouper???
20/04/06 Vicky & Kevin Crowshaw - England Third and final day for Vicky and Kevin, and Vicky's stomach braved Barra where she landed a very nice 6.5kg Ladyfish and Kevin had 2 Snapper to 3kg and a small'ish Cassava of 2.5kg. Now, what were we saying about female anglers???? Well Done Vicky!
19/04/06 Barry & Chris Ellis - England Day 1 for couple No.3 (can you see a pattern emerging) and Barry & Chris headed up the creeks, catching a Grouper, 2 Snapper (who missed 6????) a small Captain Fish (which they returned), a Talappia, some Angel Fish, a BIG Frogfish, a Cassava and some Wrasse. Unfortunately, day 1 turned out to be their last day as Chris succumbed to an upset stomach and they had to cancel the remainder of their trips. We do hope you got better before flying back Chris, we really enjoyed your company and look forward to seeing you out here again soon!!!!
18/04/06 Steve & Bev Robinson-Grindey - England Day 3 and Steve and Bev headed up the creeks (by way of a change). And, continuing the variety theme, they landed 2 small Barracuda (c.1kg) 4 Snapper (to 2kg) Angel Fish, Frogfish and Sunpat.
17/04/06 Steve & Bev Robinson-Grindey - England Day 2 for couple No.2, and Steve and Bev were rewarded with a couple of  Doctor Fish, 2 Butterfish, 6 Angel Fish, 2 Frogfish and a BIG Sunpat. So, OK they're not big fish, but Steve & Bev are definitely going for variety!!
16/04/06 Steve & Bev Robinson-Grindey - England Another very warm welcome to more new customers, Steve & Bev. (who already knows that she's going to out fish her husband!)For the first day, Steve & Bev headed out to the reefs where they lost 4 Snapper before landing a nice Pompano, a Choff, some Wrasse and Angel Fish. Who had the most fish????
13/04/06 Vicky & Kevin Crowshaw - England Day 2, and back in the creeks (Vicky didn't fancy a re-run) and this time the pair had a Sunpat, 4 Snapper, a couple of Catfish, Frogfish and a Snake.
10/04/06 Vicky & Kevin Crowshaw - England A very warm Hooked On Gambia welcome to some more new customers! On this, their first day, the pair headed out to the inshore reefs where Kevin landed a 3kg Ladyfish and 4 Captain Fish to 2kg before Vicky's stomach got the better of here and they headed back into the creeks. Vicky could then start fishing and landed a small Grouper and a couple of Frogfish. And, they're off the mark...
09/04/06 Hooked On Gambia Back out to Barra after a day's rest, and the wind was back, conditions were rough, but they managed to land a nice Ladyfish of around 3.5kg.
07/04/06 Hooked On Gambia With tides good for Barra and a drop in tyhe wind, Bob and Dembo seized the opportunity to get out again. And, finally a purple day - 10 Cassava to 8kg and the guys reckon that they lost another 10, all on a pennel rig with live sardines!
06/04/06 Billy Evans, Simon & Sam Darlinson - England What with the wind forcing the trio into the creeks, and jelly fish (yup, they've migrated here too!) the guys contented themselves with a Catfish and a Frogfish.
04/04/06 Frank Stewart - Lanzarote Frank's last day, and unfortunately it was marred by a sudden invasion of Jelly Fish. resulting in 1 lost run at Mantel and a Snake. Nevertheless, Frank insists that he had a good day and will be back again next year. Now, that's what we like to hear!
03/04/06 Hooked On Gambia Suffering from severe fishing withdrawal and hot on the back of Anwer's success yesterday, we headed out to Mantel where Bob landed a Cassava of 6.5kg.
02/04/06 Anwer Ismail - England Finally, Anwer's last day, and back on board Lady Rita with Dembo, fingers and toes crossed, Anwer went for bust on Mantel...... And, thank God, a result. A Snapper of around 8kg, a Cassava of 7kg and a couple of Frogfish, and he also missed a big Cassava and a Captain Fish but heh, who's counting? Once again, it was absolutely lovely having Anwer and Liz out here and we look forward to seeing you both again 'reel' soon!
01/04/06 Anne & Bob Goodier - England & daughter Liz - Gambia On board Lady Rita with Francois, the family landed a Butterfish a Snake and a Catfish. OK so it's not brilliant fishing at the moment, but at least they were catching!
01/04/06 Anwer & Liz Ismail - England Given the wind, we went back to Anwer's hotel to pick up Liz for a day's creek fishing and a trip to Lamin Lodge on board Lady Fiona with Dembo. Well, after Anwer's poor day yesterday, at least they had a Snapper a Sunpat and a couple of frogfish (although not the record breaker that Liz was going for).

     March 2006

Well you can keep your global warming if this is the effect that it has on the fishing in The Gambia! And, whilst we (natives) are looking forward to the 'rainy season' (or green season as it has now been re-named by the Gambia Tourism Authority) and the excellent fishing to be had then, we can only keep our fingers, and now toes, crossed for our anglers fishing with us between now and then.

31/03/06 Frank Stewart - Lanzarote Briefly reunited with his fishing friends before they flew out yesterday, Frank (complete with his new passport hee, hee) fished with Francois on board Lady Rita also at Mantel and also had absolutely nothing........
31/03/06 Anwer Ismail - England On board Lady Fiona with Dembo, Anwer didn't have a sausage at Mantel!
30/03/06 Nick Calvert & Peter Hallam - England On board Lady Rita with Dembo and as there's nothing written in the diary, we have a sneaky suspicion that they had nada - again ARGHHHH!
29/03/06 Nick Calvert - England On board Lady Rita with Francois, Nick was determined to do some more trolling until the wind forced him back in to the creek where he lost 2 Snapper (again), and landed a small Stingray and a fairly big Snake.
29/03/06 Anwer Ismail - England On board Lady Fiona with Dembo, Anwer headed out to Mantel where he landed a nice 6.5kg Cassava.
28/03/06 Nick Calvert - England On board Lady Fiona with Dembo, Nick went to Mantel where they had nothing before the wind picked up forcing them back in to the creeks where he had a Snapper of 1kg (hoorah!) and missed a further 2.
28/03/06 Dave Arnold, Owen Keogh & Roger Warren - Lanzarote On board Lady Rita with Francois for their last day and, arghhhh - nothing! But heh - that's fishing guys, and we certainly enjoyed your company for the week!!!
27/03/06 Nick Calvert - England On board Lady Fiona with Dembo, Nick headed out to the reefs off Fajara via Cape Point for some trolling and had ..... nothing (Arghhhhhhh!)
27/03/06 Dave Arnold, Owen Keogh & Roger Warren - Lanzarote On board Lady Rita with Francois, the trio headed over to Barra where Dave landed himself a very nice 16kg Snapper (on Bonga fillet), then lost another 2 big fish (on live sardines), and they went on to bag a Stingray, Catfish and a variety of other smaller fish. Well done Dave, you've restored our faith, there are still some nice fish to be had in The Gambia!
26/03/06 Nick Calvert & Peter Hallam - England On board Lady Rita with Francois, Nick was determined to try out his deep diving lures and almost immediately hooked into a Barracuda. However, over 25 minutes and a lot of sweat later Nick lost it (the second this holiday - arghh!). They did however manage to catch a small Catfish, Wrasse and those omnipresent Frogfish.
26/03/06 Anne & Bob Goodier - Scotland with grandaughter Zena - Gambia On board Lady Fiona with Dembo, the trio headed up the creeks for a spot of bird watching, a visit to Lamin Lodge and, obviously some fishing, as Zena's dad had promised her money for each fish that she caught .... So, after enjoying the antics of the monkeys, the challenge was on and Zena (a natural) landed a Sunpat, a small Captain Fish and an Atlantic Horse Mackerel - another first for Hooked On Gambia!
25/03/06 Nick Calvert & Peter Hallam - England Well the Wind God is back again, although it was remarkably calm on the day so the pair headed over to Barra with Dembo on board Lady Fiona where they lost a BIG Captain Fish - the first of this holiday.
25/03/06 Dave Arnold, Owen Keogh & Roger Warren - Lanzarote Together again (on board Lady Rita with Francois) the threesome headed over to Barra where, in spite of losing a couple of big runs, they landed 2 Grouper and a Snapper before heading back through the creeks where they had a Stingray and a Frogfish.
24/03/06 Roger Warren - Lanzarote Roger also headed up the creeks with Francois on his skiff and bagged a nice Snapper too!
24/03/06 Dave Arnold & Owen Keogh - Lanzarote Another very warm welcome back to Dave who brought 2 of his angling buddies with him to fish with us this time (it should have been 3 but Frank didn't check to see that his passport had expired prior to getting to Las Palmas airport....!)

Anyway, Dave and Owen headed up the creeks on board Lady Fiona with Dembo where they landed a Snapper, a Grouper and a small Ladyfish.

23/03/06 Anwer Ismail - England Day 2 over at Barra (with Dembo on board Lady Rita) where he lost a big fish, which we think was probably a Snapper.
22/03/06 Anwer Ismail - England A huge Hooked On Gambia welcome back to Anwer, who was one of our very first customers in 2003 and his appetite hasn't abated... so armed with plenty of sandwiches on board Lady Rita with Dembo, he headed out to Barra where he landed 2 Captain Fish, a Ladyfish and 2 Cassava. A great start to his fishing holiday we think you'll agree!
20/03/06 Naim Gesus - Morocco On board Lady Rita with Michael, the pair headed up the creeks (well surprise, surprise, it was very windy) where they landed a Butterfish and a Grouper.
20/03/06 Clive Daniel - England On board Lady Fiona with Dembo, Clive headed up the creeks where he landed Frogfish, 2 Sunpats, a couple of Catfish, a small Grouper, Wrasse, a Blonde Ray and a Snake, and although none were of any real size, Clive still assured us that he'd had a lovely day. Well, we enjoyed having you too!!!
11/03/06 Peter Beech - England Finally convincing his long suffering fishing widow that he needed another day fishing with us (even though this was supposed to be a non-fishing holiday), Pete headed out after the Tarpon at Dog Island. And, although the conditions were perfect, after a few hours and no sightings (other than mist) Dembo headed down towards Barra - and again we forgot to make a note of what they caught....SORRY!
10/03/06 Max & Claire Smith - England More new customers, however by the time we got Claire to Barra she felt so sick that we had to turn back and drop her back off on the beach at her hotel. Nevertheless, ever the caring partner, Max headed back out for a few more hours (and embarrasingly, we forgot to make a note of what he caught) and we hope you still enjoyed your day with us!
07/03/06 The Paige Family - England A very warm Hooked On Gambia welcome back to the Paige family who first fished with us over Christmas 2003. In spite of Brad growing beyond all recognition, his fishing skills were still very much in evidence, as he and his friend landed 2 Snapper, a Ladyfish, a Captain Fish, a Choff and several Wrasse in the River Alahein.
03/03/06 Hooked On Gambia Bob and Dembo headed back up the creeks again after the 2 Captain's that got away on the 26th Feb. Not finding them, the pair contented themselves with 2 Snapper to 3kg, a Snake, and the daddy of all Frogfish!

     February 2006

The only constant this month has been the wind which has whipped up the sand and surf on the beaches, and coming from a north easterly quarter has meant some uncomfortable fishing (when we've finally managed to get out to sea) with wind over tide and pretty disappointing fishing. Our old Swansea (Bristol Channel) adage of  'when the wind is in the east, the fish feed least' obviously holds true here in The Gambia as well!

27/02/06 Hooked On Gambia Going stir crazy, and confined to land as the wind continued to blow, Dembo and Bob headed up the creeks where they drew a blank having lost 2 big Captain Fish and then being swarmed by hundreds of bees at the wrecks just as the Snapper started to feed - aaarrghhhhhhh!
23/02/06 Taff Evans - Wales and Toby Wilson - England A very warm Hooked On Gambia welcome to our very first Thomas Cook airplane crew! Taff and Toby, on stopover, made the most of their last day under the African Sun trying a spot of sea fishing for the first time. And, in spite of the wind (yup it's still here) Taff landed a 3kg Barracuda and Toby (who'd never fished before) had a Frogfish over at Barra.
21/02/06 Hooked On Gambia Finally a day when we could get out to sea, and anxious to see if there were any fish left out there, Bob and Dembo headed over to Barra. Here, having failed to hook up in to the big Jacks that moved through their fishing ground, and having watched as the Tarpon moved majestically up river, they managed to whittle out one Cassava. Well, at least the fish were there.
20/02/06 Mark, Mandy, Chris and Scott Cooper - England At last, some anglers who actually wanted to go creek fishing and therefore got what they wanted! Nevertheless, the family did a spot of trolling in the pool beneath Denton Bridge for Dad's 'Cuda, which Chris caught, before heading up into the creek system proper where Scott caught Dad's Snake! After a spot of lunch at Lamin Lodge (where they enjoyed the antics of the monkeys as they stole some German's food from under his nose), the family were finally chased off the wrecks by the bees (yup, they're back again) and headed back in to Denton just before the effects of a full day in the sun began to tell. We had a great time with you guys, and hope that if you come back again, Dad's allowed to fish on his own (so as not to be outfished by his family - hee, hee!)
16/02/06 Nick Calvert - England It's official, Nick is the wind God!!! One whole week of fishing in the creeks, but at least on this, his last 'very windy' day, he finally got his Barracuda fishing the bottom, lost one trolling and had another two nice Snapper on the wrecks.
15/02/06 Nick Calvert - England Back in the creeks 'up north', Nick had another 2 Snapper, lost one, had a load of Frogfish and at last a decent Sunpat.
14/02/06 Nick Calvert - England Frustrated by the strong winds up north, we took Nick down to the River Alahein on the Senegalese border where we were hoping that at least we could find some shelter. And, finally, fishing off a small pirogue right at the mouth of the River, Nick had a couple of Guitarfish, a small Captain Fish, a couple of Catfish and Bob lost a nice 6kg Ladyfish right at the side of the boat.
13/02/06 Nick Calvert - England Once again, confined to the creek system, Nick lost 2 Barracuda (bottom fishing with shrimp - these fish must be really hungry) but had another 3 Snapper and a big Frogfish.
12/02/06 Nick Calvert - England CANCELLED as it just got even windier!
11/02/06 Nick Calvert - England Our very own wind God is back for more .... and yes, you guessed it, it was just too windy to even contemplate going to sea so Nick and Dembo ended up in the creek system. Nevertheless, Nick still managed to whittle out 3 Snapper to 2.5kg.
09/02/06 Peter Beech - England And then there was just 1 ..... sufficiently spurred on by Bob's reports of the Snapper over at Barra, Peter headed back out there with Dembo on board Lady Rita. And, in spite of the wind and rain he also lost 2 Snapper including the 'whopper' that had eluded Bob yesterday, before finally landing a nice 7kg one and a Frogfish (thanks to Dembo!)
08/02/06 Hooked On Gambia With Lady Fiona rigged for a day's fishing, it seemed a shame to just put her back on her mooring, so Bob headed over to Barra with Michael at the helm, under the pretext of trying out some new deep diving lures. Here, the pair lost 4 big Snapper (including 1 whopper) and a 'Cuda on the bottom (when it bit through the trace) but did land a nice 8.5 kg Snapper thus 'really embarrasingly' outfishing Peter and Peter.
08/02/06 Peter Beech and Peter Hewitt - England Then they were 2, following too much sun over the last couple of days. So, with Dembo on board Lady Rita, the two Pete's headed out to the inshore reefs around Cape Point and Mantel. Once again, the fishing was disappointing with just a small Stingray, Frogfish, yet more Catfish (again), Jelly Nose and a Cuttlefish ......
07/02/06 Peter Beech, Mav Bryant, Peter Hewitt and Brian Sims - England Today the guys accompanied by Dembo headed down to Sangyang beach for some beach casting amid reports that some big Guitarfish were showing. Unfortunately, the water was still 'dirty' resulting in Catfish City and a spot of sunburn!
06/02/06 Mav Bryant and Peter Hewitt - England Mav and Peter also headed out towards Barra on board Lady Rita with Ousman and were rewarded with a Grouper a Ladyfish and small baitfish. So OK it wasn't a brilliant start to the fishing, but at least the guys were are the mark.
06/02/06 Peter Beech and Brian Sims - England It was great to welcome back Peter Beech from Cornwall, this time accompanied by three of his good friends for a weeks dedicated fishing. Peter and Brian headed out to Barra in Lady Fiona with Dembo where they lost a BIG Stingray when the trace snapped (don't you just hate it when that happens?) but did manage to catch a Barracuda and some Catfish for their efforts. Sorry Pete, but we can't remember if this was the day when another 'Cuda supposedly threw a lure, and it came back and hit you on the forehead...... (thus explaining away quite nicely the cut on your forehead - hee, hee!!!!)
02/02/06 Steve Rees - Wales Finally recovered from the exertions of his last boat trip, we dragged Steve down the coast to Gunjur for a spot of beach fishing. And, although we managed to whittle out one nice Sunpat (once Steve finally got the hang of it) before the wind picked up, the water then became murky and Catfish City prevailed.

     January 2006

HAPPY NEW YEAR! Once again, the year has started off with lots of wind (not Julbrew induced) and, as we don't believe in coincidences, we blame it on the return of our very own Wind God, Nick Calvert! Anyway, Brian Grunill and Steve Eastwood are still here, and in spite of juggling boats and having to deal with the weather conditions, 2006 looks as though it could be a good year - here's keeping our fingers crossed!!!!!!

31/01/06 Steve Rees - Wales Steve, convinced that there are no big fish in The Gambia was reluctantly dragged back out of bed to go fishing again - and what a good job he went. After a fight lasting approximately 1 hour on the inshore reefs (and the rod being passed between Bob, Dembo and Steve eventually), Steve caught his first glimpse of a massive Stingray (guesstimated to be approx. 200kg in weight) and decided that he didn't really want the fish on board with him. After straightening the stainless steel gaff and almost dragging Dembo over the side with it, the fish (minus Dembo as Steve was by then haning on to Dembo's feet) headed back off into the depths.

Totally unpeturbed by this, the rods went back out again and Steve finally caught himself a decent 10kg Snapper which he was more than happy to share a boat with!

30/01/06 Steve Rees - Wales Braving it on the inshore reefs (in spite of a bit of a chop on the water - well it's nothing compared to the Bristol Channel!) Steve landed a nice Cassava, but between him, Dembo and Bob they managed to miss about 10 other decent hits.
29/01/06 Steve Rees - Wales A very warm Hooked On Gambia welcome to Steve (our former fishing partner in the UK) on this his first visit to The Gambia. An easy day up the Creek for Steve (to ease him in gently) resulted in 2 small Snapper, some Angel Fish, a Sunpat and a Frogfish.
27/01/06 Neville Smith - England A day up the creek for Dembo, Bob and Neville without any  shrimp bait but 'Neville'theless they managed to whittle out 2 small Snapper, a Grouper of 6 - 7lb, some Frogfish and Nev had a 'hammerhead' but not of the piscatorial variety!!!!
22/01/06 Neville Smith - England A very warm Hooked On Gambia welcome back to Neville (formerly of The Gambia) and his first day ever beach fishing. After some basic tuition on the art of beach casting, Nev. was soon in to his first fish. Having lost a Butterfish (the line was serrated) and something else, Nev. finally got the hang of it and landed 4 really nice Catfish which were gratefully received by some kids passing on the beach!
21/01/06 Hooked On Gambia Finally, after a very windy week, Bob and Dembo headed out to the inshore reefs to see if anything was moving. And, although they lost 3 big hits, they finally managed to land a nice Cassava.
13/01/06 Jan Oor - Holland Another day for Jan over at Barra (having decided not to bother with Tarpon fishing at Dog Island), and this time 2 nice Cassava. This turned out to be Jan's last day as the weather changed (again) and the wind picked up for the remainder of Jan's holiday. However, we trust that you enjoyed fishing with us as much as we enjoyed fishing with you Jan!
12/01/06 Jan Oor - Holland A big Hooked On Gambia welcome to a new customer, Jan and with a day's Tarpon fishing on the cards, we were all keeping our fingers crossed. After watching hundreds of Dolphins moving through the fishing grounds at Dog Island and not even a glimpse of Tarpon, Dembo and Jan headed back downstream to Barra where they had 2 Barracuda trolling and scooped up a Ladyfish.
11/01/06 Nick Calvert & Brian Grunnill - England Buoyed up by yesterday's results, the duo headed back out to Barra for some more trolling with Michael (even though today was a national holiday for Tobaski), and produced a small 7kg Barracuda. However, we think Brian enjoyed the rain more than the fishing - well it is the 11th January afterall and it has rained on the 11th for the last couple of years!!!!!
10/01/06 Nick Calvert & Brian Grunnill - England Never one to give up, Nick convinced Mr Brian to head back over to Barra where finally they produced 2 Barracuda  up to 12kg whilst trolling and some Frogfish on the bottom.
09/01/06 Brian Grunnill & Kevin Street - England Another bitterly cold start to the day at Denton Bridge and with the wind still blowing all we could suggest was some creek fishing on this Kevin's first trip with Hooked On Gambia. Nevertheless, paired up with Mr Brian, they managed to whittle out 3 nice Cassava, a Sunpat, a Red Snapper and a Frogfish. WELL DONE GUYS!!!
08/01/06 Nick Calvert, Peter Hallam & Brian Grunnill - England So, we're all back on the beach where at least we know it's going to be a bit more comfortable and where we have a chance of some fish if only the wind stays down! And, joy of joys the guys had a small Captain Fish, a banded Butterfish, some small Catfish and a nice Jack - hip hip hooray there are fish in The Gambia today!!!!!
